What is Valpolicella?
Valpolicella is a red wine from the Veneto region of Italy, known for its variety of styles and flavors. The region is located in the foothills of the Venetian Prealps, north of Verona. Valpolicella has been produced since around the time of the ancient Greeks; however, the exact period of its cultivation is unknown. The tradition of using partially dried grapes, known as “Greco” or “Greek Style,” enhances the wine’s depth and flavor. The region’s microclimate, influenced by nearby lakes and mountains, creates warm days and cool nights—ideal conditions for growing grapes.
Grape Varieties
Valpolicella wines are made from indigenous grape varieties, each contributing unique flavors that give the wine its distinctive character.
- Corvina: The backbone of Valpolicella wines, Corvina brings cherry flavors, bright acidity, and a hint of almond on the finish.
- Corvinone: Often blended with Corvina, it adds body, structure, and more intense flavors.
- Rondinella: Adds floral notes and softens the blend, providing balance.
- Molinara: Though a minor component today, Molinara contributes acidity and lightness to some blends.
Wine Styles That We Offer
- Tommasi Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore: Known for its dark cherry and plum flavors, this “baby Amarone” uses the Ripasso method, where young Valpolicella wine is re-passed over Amarone grape skins to add depth, body, and flavor.
- Ripasso: Medium to full-bodied with rich fruit and spice; excellent with hearty Italian dishes, game, and aged cheeses.
- Amarone: Full-bodied, bold, and complex with flavors of dried fruit and dark chocolate; pairs well with braised meats, rich pasta dishes, or can be enjoyed on its own.
